The
Background of Transactional Analysis
Eric Berne is probably better known for his best selling book ‘Games
people play’. His many writings formed the basis of the theory
of personality and systematic psychotherapy we call Transactional
Analysis.
The Ego-state model of Parent, Adult and Child (at the heart of the
theory) describes our psychological structure, and helps us to understand
how we function and communicate and use the patterns of behaviour
we developed as children throughout our lives.
TA lends itself to Educational and Organisational applications as
a theory of communication as well as being a practical means of diagnosis
and treatment for numerous psychological disorders.
TA has such great value due the breadth of its applications as
A theory of personality
A theory of psychopathology
A practical system of diagnosis and treatment in a therapeutic setting
A theory of communication in educational and organisational arenas
A theory of Child development
3DTA
explains Bernes basic principles of TA including:
The Ego State Model
The Functional Model
Transactions between people using Ego States
Life Script
As well as contributions to TA theory from other TA thinkers that
combine to make the basic TA we know today
Transactional Analysis today has national (ITA)
and international (EATA and
ITAA) professional bodies.
